My Shoestring Adventure Begins
So yeah, my old water shoes basically died after last summer. Flopping around like sad, wet pancakes. Figured it was time for an upgrade. Saw some chatter online about these RYKA Hydro Sport ones, supposed to be good for ladies’ feet and water stuff. “Cross training water shoe” – sounded fancy. Me? I just need something that doesn’t slip off when I’m chasing the kids at the splash pad or hauling groceries out of a wet trunk. Practical, you know?

The Great Online Hunt (And Major Frustration)
First stop, obviously, the big name stores online. Typed it in exactly: ryka womens hydro sport cross training water shoe. Bam. Main sports retailer website pops right up. Found ’em. Looked okay. Price? Meh. Not horrible, not great. Kinda “meh, whatever”.
Didn’t want to just grab the first pair though. That’s rookie stuff. Started clicking around:
- Checked another huge department store site. Found the shoes… same dang price as the first place. No surprise there.
- Tried a couple other well-known shoe sites. Some had ’em, others didn’t. Prices were like twins – identical.
- Got hopeful when I saw “SALE” slapped on a page. Rushed over. Only tiny sizes left. My size? Nada. Zip. Big disappointment.
- Scrolled, scrolled, scrolled. Annoying. Why is finding a simple deal so hard?
Digging Deeper & The Used Rabbit Hole
Okay, standard sites weren’t playing ball. Time to get sneaky. Hopped over to the giant online flea market site. You know the one. Lots of listings! But man, what a minefield.
- First listing: “Brand New!”. Photo looked weird. Dusty box. Sketchy. Passed.
- Next one: “Worn Once!”. Price seemed okay. Zoomed in on the soles. Scuff marks galore! “Worn once”? More like dragged behind a car. No thanks.
- Saw a super cheap pair. Got all excited! Read the description… “Minor tear near heel, superglue works great!”. Great. Just what I need, a project shoe. Pass.
Checked a couple similar resale sites. Same story: either suspiciously new, clearly trashed, or just not the right color/size. Wasted a good chunk of time feeling grumpy.
The Payoff (Sort Of…)
Was about to give up and just pay full price at the main sports store. Grumbling under my breath. Thought, “Wait a sec…” and signed into my account on that first big sports retailer website I checked. Scrolled down to the product page again. Almost clicked “buy”. Then… spotted it. A tiny little box saying “Sign up for texts, get 10% off”. Huh.
Couldn’t remember if I was signed up already. Grabbed my phone, checked messages. Searched for old texts from them. Found one! Fired up their app. Added the dang shoes to my cart. Went to checkout. Typed in my phone number… and bingo! A little discount box popped up. Knocked ten percent off.
Wasn’t a massive windfall, not some crazy 75% off miracle find. But hey, ten bucks saved is ten bucks saved. Better than zero. Plus, free shipping over a certain amount, which I hit. Sweet.
Hit the “Place Order” button. Done. Got the email confirmation. Relief!
My “Winning” Strategy
So yeah, the journey was:
- Checked major retailers first. Easy find, boring prices.
- Dove into resale sites. Got messy fast. Not worth the hassle for these, apparently.
- Almost paid full price. Almost.
- Snagged the only deal I could actually get: a measly 10% off coupon from the main store by using their text signup. Felt like finding a penny on the sidewalk, but hey, it paid for half a coffee later.
They arrived yesterday. Fit nice. Feel light and grippy. Worked out okay in the end, I guess, even if the “deal” wasn’t exactly earth-shattering. Next time, maybe start looking in winter!
