How This All Started
So my old workout shorts? Total crap. Pockets were tiny or fake, felt like wearing a plastic bag halfway through a run. Saw everyone raving about these “stay dry feel great” shorts with actual pockets you can use. Yeah right, I thought. But my wallet disagreed and I clicked “buy now” on three different pairs people called “top rated”. Let’s see what happened.

Putting Them to the Test (Literally)
First brand arrived in this fancy recycled bag. Felt nice pulling them out. Light, stretchy. Tag promised “moisture-wicking magic”. Thought “Okay, maybe.” Wore them for a quick gym session. Did treadmill, some weights.Immediate thoughts:
- Felt light? Check.
- Pockets held my phone without it bouncing everywhere? Big check.
- But… did they stay dry? Hmm.
Got sweaty. Touched the fabric. It was… damp. Not soaked, but definitely not “dry”. Weird.
Next brand was cheaper, looked simpler. Took these ones for a proper run outside. Sunny day, tough route. Pockets were actually bigger on these! Carried phone, keys, a gel packet. Felt pretty secure. But then reality hit:
- Felt okay for the first mile.
- Mile two? Started feeling that familiar sticky feeling around my thighs.
- By mile three? Total swamp butt situation. SERIOUSLY?
So much for “feel great”. Felt like I was dragging soggy towels.
The third pair was the priciest. Fanciest packaging, felt premium. Used them for an intense HIIT class – jumping, sweating buckets. Kept checking the pockets every jump. Phone stayed put! That part was awesome. So the big questions:
- Stayed dry? Honestly, did better than the others. Still got damp, but not soaked through.
- Felt great? Better material, didn’t rub weird. But that dampness, especially in the liner? Yeah, still annoying.
Got home, peeled them off. More like carefully peeled them off, feeling sticky.
What Actually Worked (And What Didn’t)
Okay, let’s break this down real simple:
- Pockets Win: All three delivered big time on usable pockets. Phone, keys, fuel – stayed put. No fighting with tiny flaps or fake zippers. FINALLY!
- “Stay Dry” is a Lie: Sorry brands, nope. Damp, sticky, swampy. Maybe “dries kinda faster than some cheap stuff”? Sure. But “stay dry”? Get outta here.
- “Feel Great” is Temporary: They felt okay putting on, great for maybe 20 minutes. Once the sweat kicked in? Feelings changed fast. Breathable they were not.
Bottom line? If pockets are your holy grail, these kinds do deliver. You can actually use them. But believing the “stay dry feel great” marketing? Don’t bother. Wearing them feels okay for light stuff, sucks for anything where you actually break a sweat. Probably why I saw so many reviews just mentioning the pockets, not the magical dry feeling.
Where My Wallet (And Butt) Stand Now
So, what happened to those three pairs?
- The fancy ones? I wear them for walks or short gym trips where I know I won’t sweat much. Pockets are useful.
- The cheap swamp makers? Gathering dust. Might become pajama shorts or something. Or rag.
- The “better but still damp” ones? Okay for shorter runs on cooler days. Still annoy me though.
Husband saw the boxes and gave me that look. You know the one. Yeah, wasted some money chasing that perfect short unicorn. Learned a lesson: Pockets? Found ’em. True comfort during real sweat sessions? Still missing in action. Guess I’m sticking with my ratty old leggings with side pockets for running until someone actually makes something that lives up to the hype without the soggy lie.
