Okay, so I’ve been messing around with fantasy football stuff for a while, and I always get hung up on wide receiver rankings. It’s a total headache, right? So many guys, so much hype, and it’s hard to know who’s actually gonna produce. I decided to finally figure this out, for my own sanity, and maybe it’ll help someone else too.

Digging into the Data
First, I grabbed a bunch of stats. I used to get those from all kinds of websites. Basic stuff, you know? Receptions, yards, touchdowns. All that jazz.
Then, I started looking at more than just the raw numbers. Stuff like targets – how often the quarterback even tries to throw to the guy. And yards per catch, because a guy who gets 5 yards every catch isn’t as exciting as a guy who gets 15, even if they have the same number of catches. Right?
The Messy Part: My Spreadsheet
I dumped all this into a spreadsheet. It was ugly, I’m not gonna lie. A bunch of columns, color-coding (because I’m a visual person, okay?), and a lot of squinting at numbers. I felt like a mad scientist, but with less cool lab equipment.
- Column 1: Player Name (obviously)
- Column 2: Receptions
- Column 3: Receiving Yards
- Column 4: Touchdowns
- Column 5: Targets
- Column 6: Yards per Catch
- …and a few more I probably forgot about.
I even tried to factor in things like the quarterback’s skill. I mean, a receiver is only as good as the guy throwing him the ball, most of the time. No perfect science there, I just used my gut feeling and some “expert” opinions I found.
Tweaking and Swearing
Then came the fun part: tweaking the formula. I played around with how much weight to give each stat. Should touchdowns be worth more than yards? Is a high target share a really good sign, or does it just mean the quarterback has no other options? It was a lot of trial and error, and probably some cursing under my breath. More then once the spreadsheet made no sense!
Finally, Some Rankings!
Eventually, I got to a point where I had a list. My list. It’s not perfect, and I’m sure some people will disagree, but it’s my ranking based on what I think is important. And it makes sense to me, which is what really matters when you’re trying to win your fantasy league, right?
I keep updating it throughout the season, too. Because things change! Guys get injured, some players will get worse and some will get better, and you gotta stay on top of it. It’s a never-ending process, but hey, it’s better than just guessing, right?
