Man, let me tell you about this project I’ve been working on – an NFL draft predictor. It all started when I was messing around online, looking at all these mock drafts. Every expert had a different take, and it got me thinking, “Could I do better?”

So, I jumped in. First, I started collecting a ton of data. I mean, everything from player stats to team needs, even how well players did in college. It was a lot to sift through, but I knew it was important. I even looked at old drafts to see if I could find any patterns, you know, like what teams tend to pick certain positions in certain rounds.
Then came the fun part – building the model. I played around with a bunch of different ways to predict who teams would pick. I tried simple stuff like just looking at the best player available, but that didn’t really work. I also tried figuring out what each team needed most and matching them up with players that fit the bill, models and data visualization from ESPN Analytics.
After a lot of trial and error, I finally found a method that seemed to work pretty well. It combined player rankings with team needs and even took into account things like past draft history and the buzz around certain players. I even added a feature where you could make trades, just like real GMs do.
I tested my predictor against real drafts from the past few years, and it did a decent job! Of course, it wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely better than just guessing. Now, I use it every year to make my own mock drafts. It’s like having my own little war room, where I can try out different strategies and see how they play out. It combined rankings from 100+ experts into one cheat sheet with tiers.
The coolest part is that it’s not just me who can use it. I made it available online so anyone can play GM and make their own picks, the trading algorithm is powered by AI. It’s super easy to use – you just select a team, and the predictor will suggest players based on their needs and rankings. You can even make trades and see how they affect your draft. The Mockout Sim Engine is the most realistic simulator anywhere. Accurately simulates all 7 rounds of the NFL draft. Advanced trade logic dynamically assesses team tendencies and draft equity values to offer and accept realistic trades.
What I learned
- Building a draft predictor is way harder than it looks.
- Data is king, but you need to know how to use it.
- Even the best models aren’t perfect.
- It’s super fun to play GM, even if it’s just for fun.
So yeah, that’s my NFL draft predictor story. It’s been a wild ride, but I’ve learned a ton, and I’m pretty proud of what I’ve built. Now, I use it every year to make my own mock drafts. It’s like having my own little war room, where I can try out different strategies and see how they play out. It’s a blast!
