Grabbed my phone thinking I’d check social media, but cell service out here in Vega’s spottier than a Dalmatian.
Remembered old Coach Jenkins still does score updates for the radio station. Dialed him up around 9 PM, heard pots clanging in the background while he yelled “HOLD ON THE STOVE’S SMOKING!” Took three tries but finally got through when he was between quarters. Guy sounded winded like he’d just run a post route himself.

- Canyon High got absolutely walloped 42-7 by Plainview – quarterback threw more picks than a garden hoe
- Amarillo High barely scraped by 24-21 in double OT when their kicker nailed a 40-yarder with 3 seconds left
- Dumas shut out Perryton 14-0 in a game so boring Jenkins yawned through the play-by-play
- Pampa forfeited last minute because half their O-line got food poisoning from pre-game tacos
Ended up cross-checking with Betty Sue who works the concession stand at Happy High – she confirmed Amarillo’s score when I called her at 11 PM. Sent the list to my brother who replied “damn right that’s my boy!” with twelve crying-laughing emojis. Gonna laminate this notepad page for next year’s playoff run.
