You know, I heard some folks talking ’bout how much them basketball officials get paid. It got me thinking, them folks running up and down the court, they must make a pretty penny, right? I mean, they’re always there, at every game, making sure nobody’s cheating or nothing.
Well, I did some digging, you know, just asking around, and what I found out, it kinda surprised me. See, it ain’t all the same. It’s like, how much money you got depends on how good you are, and how long you been doing it. Just like everything else in life, I reckon.
Now, them big shots, the ones you see on the TV all the time, in them NBA games, they’re rolling in it. I heard some of them make as much as five hundred and fifty thousand dollars! Can you believe that? That’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! They are like big bosses. And they get more money if the games are important, like them playoff things. If you are new, you can only get 600 dollars per game. That is not bad, right?

- The newbies, they start at around $600 a game, or $250,000 a year. That’s a lot of money.
- The old-timers, the ones who been around forever, they can make up to $3,500 or even $9,000 for just one game!
But, you know, there’s different kinds of them basketball games. It ain’t all the NBA. There’s that college ball too, what they call NCAA. Now, the folks who do them games, they don’t make as much as the NBA ones, but they still do alright, I guess. The best ones make pretty good money. It just depends on what kind of game it is, and how many folks are watching, I suppose.
It ain’t just about the money, though, is it? It’s a tough job, being a basketball official. You gotta be quick, you gotta know all them rules, and you gotta be able to handle all them players and coaches yelling at you. If you are good, you can get a raise, just like other jobs. I heard the best one can make $550,000 a year. That is a lot! But some only get $150,000, which is still a lot of money for me. It’s a lot of running up and down that court, that’s for sure. I couldn’t do it, not at my age. My knees would give out for sure!
And you gotta be fair, too. You can’t be taking sides, even if you got a favorite team. You gotta call it like you see it, even if it makes folks mad. That takes guts, I tell you. They also have to check them all the time. If they do good, they get more money. If they do bad, they lose money. And they gotta make sure everybody is playing fair. It ain’t easy, being the one in charge like that.
So, yeah, them basketball officials, they make a decent living, some of them more than decent. But it’s a hard job, and you gotta be tough, and you gotta be fair. It ain’t for everyone, that’s for sure. But for them that can do it, well, they get paid alright. Just depends on how good they are, and how long they been at it, I guess. Just like everything else, the more you do it, the more you know, and the more you make.
Oh, and I also heard about them football guys. They are called NFL. Their referees make a lot of money too! The best one can make $1,500 for one game! And if the game is very important, they can make double! That’s crazy, isn’t it? But I guess it’s a tough job, too.
Anyway, that’s what I found out about how much them basketball referees make. It’s a lot, ain’t it? More than I thought, that’s for sure. But they earn it, I reckon. It ain’t easy work. If you are a rookie for NBA referee, you can get around $250,000 for a year. It is really good. If you are a veteran, you can get much more! Some can even get $550,000 for a year. That is a lot of money for me. It is a good job, I think.
