- Checked out those local sports reporters: Guys like James Weber down here, they drop nuggets on Twitter, preview stuff sometimes. Dug through their old tweets about this past season’s end, see who graduated, who’s likely stepping up.
Putting The Bits Together
Realized pretty quick that making a guide wasn’t about fancy stats or deep predictions. It was practical crap. Like, where do you actually find the schedule when it finally drops? (Hint: usually the school websites, maybe KHSAA eventually, but don’t hold your breath). Or what teams usually have a good atmosphere worth traveling for? Cov Cath is always electric, but that new Beechwood gym? Heard it’s packed and loud too.
Started a simple Google Doc. Threw in stuff I found out:
- Key dates: When does Sectional week usually land? Semifinals? Final? Everyone needs to plan days off work, babysitters.
- Venue lowdown: Parking near Holmes High? Is it a nightmare? Concessions options? Better to eat before? Simple stuff that wastes your time game day if you don’t know.
- Players to kinda keep an eye on: Not scouting reports, just names floating around consistently.
Finishing Touches And The Big Surprise
Wanted to keep it real basic. Didn’t overthink it. Just made a list of “dude, here’s what you gotta do” type things. The guide basically wrote itself once I stopped trying to make it fancy.
Funny thing? While researching, I called my nephew Jake – plays JV ball. Asked him what he thinks fans forget about the big games. He goes, “Uncle, seriously, bring cash. Concession lines are insane, card readers always die, cash is king. And wear layers, that gym goes from freezer to sauna real quick.” Simple gold! That ended up right at the top of my tips.
