Alright, so my youngest came home last week complaining his basketball coach at school only cares about the star players. He was super bummed, said he didn’t even wanna play anymore. That stung, man. Felt like I had to do something, right? He’s got potential, just needs the right training. So I sat down at my dusty old laptop thinking, “Find local basketball camps for him, easy.” Spoiler: It wasn’t.
First thing I did? Opened Google. Typed in “basketball team camps 2025 near me.” Hit search expecting gold. Got… a whole lotta junk. Seriously. Front page was all these sponsored ads for websites with names like “AllSportsPro” or “CampFinderWorld.” Total garbage. Clicked the first one – landing page screamed “EXCLUSIVE CAMPS!” then demanded my email and zip code before showing anything. Nope. Closed that tab real fast.
Tried another “local camps” site listed. Big list by state! Got hopeful. Clicked our state… aaand it showed maybe three camps total? Two were for girls only, the third looked like it was last updated in 2023. Dead end. Felt like hitting a brick wall. Figured maybe Google just ain’t it. Time to get specific.
Switched tactics. Remembered the big parks & rec department downtown does summer stuff. Found their clunky website. Navigated through “Youth Programs” (took ages) then “Sports” and finally… “Basketball.” Bingo! Found a page titled “Summer Basketball Academy 2025.” Finally! Details were basic – age groups, dates in July 2025, times, cost. Contact number listed. Wrote that down immediately.
Next stop? Schools. His high school doesn’t run camps, but I recalled the rival school across town does. Went digging on their athletic department page. Had to hunt under “Summer Programs.” There it was: “Elite Guard Skills Camp.” Perfect! Listed dates, cost, coach contact email. Print-screened that page like my life depended on it. Needed back-up options, though.
Dug deeper into community stuff. Thought about the YMCA… their site is surprisingly decent. Filtered by location, then “Sports.” Found a “2025 Summer Hoops League” – more team-based! Way better for developing teamwork than just skills. Saved that page. Also checked a few big community centers nearby via their Facebook pages (since websites are often outdated). Found one posting about a “Skills & Drills Bootcamp” starting registration soon. Stalked their page.
