Okay, so I decided to get serious about my fantasy football league this year. I mean, really serious. I’ve always just kind of winged it with my draft, picking players I liked or recognized. This year, I wanted to do things differently, I wanted to use a “by position” ranking approach.

First, I did was searching around for rankings. There are a million sites out there, some I trust with all my heart and some I think I don’t trust them that much.
After I got rankings, I started breaking them down. Instead of just having one giant list of players, I sorted them by position: Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, Tight Ends, Kickers, and Defense/Special Teams. This is the core of the “by position” strategy.
Digging Deeper into Each Position
- Quarterbacks: Looking at who throws a lot, who’s got good receivers, and who can run a bit themselves. I tried to not overvalue rushing quarterbacks.
- Running Backs: The Workhorses. I want guys that get a ton of carries. Plus, is the offensive line any good?
- Wide Receivers: Are they the main target? How often do they get thrown to? I’m searching those deep-threat guys.
- Tight Ends: Similar to receivers, but there are fewer good ones.
- Kickers: The team need to playing great, more opportunities for field goals.
- Defense/ST: I’m searching those teams that get a lot of sacks and turnovers.
So, yeah, I did this, going position by position, really thinking about what makes a player valuable within that specific role. I didn’t just prepare rankings. I also thought about how many of each position I wanted on my team. This changed how I thought about the later rounds.
It was a whole process, It took time, more than just picking names, but I felt way more prepared for my draft. My draft went great, by the way. I feel like I got great value, especially in those middle rounds.
