Alright, let’s talk about this neon tennis skirt I’ve been working on. I saw these tennis skirts all over the internet and thought, “Hey, I can totally make that!” So, I decided to give it a shot.

First things first, I needed some fabric. I wanted something bright and fun, so I went with this neon green material that I found. It’s kinda loud, but hey, that’s the point, right? I picked up some matching thread and a zipper while I was at it. You can’t forget the essentials!
Next, I needed a pattern. I’m not a pro at making my own patterns, so I found a simple tennis skirt pattern online. I printed it out, taped all the pieces together—which, let me tell you, felt like it took forever—and then cut it out. Easy peasy, or so I thought.
I laid out the fabric and started cutting out the pieces. This part was a bit tricky because the fabric was kinda slippery. But I managed to get all the pieces cut without messing up too badly. I also cut out some interfacing to give the waistband some structure.
Sewing Time
- I started by sewing the pleats. This was probably the most time-consuming part. I had to measure and fold each pleat, then pin it in place and sew it down. It took a while to get them all even, but I think they turned out pretty good.
- Next, I sewed the side seams together. I used a serger, which made it super fast and gave it a nice, clean finish. If you don’t have a serger, a regular sewing machine will work just fine.
- Then, it was time to attach the waistband. I sewed the interfacing to the waistband pieces first, then sewed the waistband to the skirt. I made sure to line everything up nicely so it wouldn’t look wonky.
- The last major step was putting in the zipper. Zippers used to scare me, but I’ve gotten better at them. I used an invisible zipper, which I think looks really sleek. It took a bit of fiddling, but I got it in there.
Finally, I hemmed the bottom of the skirt. I just did a simple rolled hem to keep it neat. And guess what, that means, I am done, I was finished! I tried it on, and it fit perfectly. I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s super cute and definitely stands out. I can’t wait to wear it out and about.
This whole project took me a few days, working on and off. It was a fun little challenge, and I’m really happy with the result. Maybe I’ll try making another one in a different color. Or maybe I’ll try a different style of skirt. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!
