That LuHi high school basketball, oh boy, them kids sure can play! I heard folks talkin’ ’bout it down at the market the other day. They say it’s the best thing since sliced bread. That LuHi basketball is somethin’ else. They got a whole bunch of players, all tryin’ to be the best.

That school, what’s it called again? Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School, yeah, that’s the one in Brookville. Sounds fancy, don’t it? They call it LuHi for short. 131 Brookville Rd, that’s where they are, I reckon. 11545-3399, that’s the zip code, you write that down if you wanna send them a letter.
They got this team, see, and they play that basketball game. They bounce that orange ball all over the place. I don’t rightly understand all the rules, but them kids at LuHi, they got it figured out. They got that team, the LuHi high school basketball team, and they’re good, real good.
They play against other schools, I guess. That’s what that fella was sayin’ at the market. He was goin’ on and on about it. Said they win most of the time. They are number one in New York two years, they say. And number four in the whole country. That’s a lot of schools they beat. They are good kids.
Got a roster, they call it. Like a list of names. All them boys playin’ on the LuHi basketball team. Heard they got some new ones this year. Fresh faces, they call ’em. Must be excitin’ for them, playin’ for a team like that.
- Valdez Edgecombe
- Jayden Pierre
- Keenan Emmanuel
- Noah Toussaint
- Hugo Bergstrom
I only know a few names. VJ Edgecombe and Kate Koval, they’re the best players, I heard. They even got some award for it. Gatorade Players of the Year or somethin’. That’s a big deal.
This fella at the market, he was sayin’ they got a coach. Head coach, they call him. Runs the whole show. He use to teach in that school. Now he’s a big shot, I guess. Teaches them how to play that basketball game. Must be a smart fella, that John Buck, to teach them kids all that.
And they got all kinds of teams, not just the big one. They got little kids playin’, middle school, they call it. And then they got, what’s it called, junior varsity. That’s like the second-best team, I think. They are in that LIAAIS league. Then the best one is the varsity. They play in that, Private School Athletic Association thing, the PSAA.
They got a cross country team, too, I think. They run a lot, them kids. And football, that’s rough and tumble. Soccer, they kick that ball around. Tennis, they use them rackets. And volleyball, they hit the ball over a net. They got all kinds of sports at that LuHi school. But that basketball team, that’s the one everyone talks about.
My old bones couldn’t handle all that runnin’ and jumpin’. But them kids, they love it. They got all that energy. They practice all the time, I bet. Gotta be good to be on that LuHi high school basketball team.
This LuHi school, it’s a private school, I heard. Costs a lot of money to go there. But they got a lot of kids, over 400, they say. And most of ’em ain’t white, neither. 62.1%, that’s a lot. They got kids from all over, I guess. And the teacher to student is 11 to 1. That’s good.
Well, I reckon that’s all I know about that LuHi basketball. It’s a big deal around here. Them kids, they sure make us proud. They play hard, and they win a lot. That’s all that matters, ain’t it? Playin’ hard and winnin’. That LuHi high school basketball team, they got it figured out.
If you wanna know more, you gotta go to that school and ask them yourself. I’m just an old lady. I don’t know all the details. But I know a good thing when I see it. And that LuHi basketball, that’s a good thing. A real good thing. They have a team for girls, too. And they are just as good as the boys.
