Today was rough. Woke up with that familiar sharp ache radiating down my butt into my leg again. Sciatic nerve acting up like always. Popped an over-the-counter pill but honestly, hate relying on stuff. Needed something else.

Stumbling on the Tennis Ball Idea
Saw this tennis ball thing for sciatic pain while scrolling, probably on one of those health forums late last night. Sounded stupid simple. Like, literally just a tennis ball? Skeptical, but desperate enough to try anything that didn’t involve swallowing something or expensive gear. Had an old, kinda dead tennis ball rolling around the garage. Dug it out. Felt silly holding it.
First Try – Major Awkwardness
Grabbed the ball, laid on the floor in my living room. Figured I’d target that big knot in my left butt cheek – the usual trouble spot. Tried shoving the ball under me while lying flat on my back. Total fail. Slipped right out, rolled away, and I nearly cricked my neck trying to see where it went. Annoying.
Switched it up. Lay face down this time. Put the ball right where it hurt most, then slowly lowered my weight onto it. HOLY HELL. Hurt so bad for a second I almost gave up. Sharp, deep pressure. Breathed through it, real slow. Kept my weight there maybe 20 seconds before rolling a tiny bit. Felt like poking a major ouch-spot.
Finding the Sweet Spots
Took a few days of messing around. Learned some stuff:
- Less weight helps. Used the wall! Leaned against it with the ball between my back and the wall. Way easier to control the pressure than lying on it.
- Slow rolls, not wild swings. Tiny movements, maybe an inch at a time. Stopped immediately if it was pure stabbing pain.
- Different spots matter. Butt cheek? Upper leg by the hip bone? Lower back? Each needed a slightly different lean or angle against the ball.
- Short bursts are key. Started with just 30-60 seconds per spot. Any longer and it felt bruised. Slowly built up time.
What Actually Happened (Weeks Later)
Been doing this daily, usually at night while watching nonsense on TV. Takes maybe 5-10 minutes total per leg/buttock. Here’s the real deal:
- Morning stiffness? Less. Getting out of bed isn’t that horrible shuffle anymore. Noticeable difference.
- Reaching down? Picking up stuff off the floor is less likely to make me gasp. Still gotta be careful, but easier.
- Walking the dog? Don’t have to stop halfway with that nasty leg zap as often. Small win.
- Pill count? Down. Way down. Haven’t touched the prescription pain stuff in weeks. Use the ball before reaching for the bottle now.
Is it a miracle? Nah. Sciatica still sucks some days. But for a stupid piece of old sports equipment collecting dust? It buys me some real relief without chemicals. Feels like I’m actually doing something about it myself. Cheap, simple, worth the awkward floor time. Fingers-crossed hope it keeps working.
