Okay so this whole women’s sports thing? Kept bugging me. Saw news clips, heard athletes talk, read stuff online. Messy. Felt like nobody really had clear answers, just shouting. So I figured, screw it – let’s dig in myself. Not just read, but do something. See what sticks.

Started by actually talking to people
Seriously, didn’t just Google this time. Tracked down local women athletes – high school, college, semi-pro. Met ’em after practice, bought coffee, asked: “What actually sucks? What scares you? What feels unfair?” Listened hard. Wrote it all down in a stupidly messy notebook. They said things like: resources getting cut, feeling pushed out of competitions, unsafe locker rooms, nobody taking injuries seriously… eye-opening.
Then I dove into the rulebooks
Grab ’em? Nah. Scanned ‘em into PDFs, used keyword searches like crazy. “Eligibility,” “safety,” “funding,” “complaint process.” Highlighted parts that sounded vague or weak. Honestly? Many were flimsy. Like, one policy said “reasonable accommodations” for safety but didn’t define “reasonable.” WTF does that mean? Left too much wiggle room. Felt annoyed. Needed specifics.
Found these 5 things kept popping up, again and again:
- Policy Teeth: Vague promises are useless. Rules gotta spell out EXACTLY what’s allowed, what counts as discrimination, and the REAL punishment for breaking ‘em. No more “maybe.”
- Money Where the Mouth Is: You gotta FOLLOW the damn rules. Set up clear, easy reporting systems. Actually investigate stuff. Make coaches ADVERTISE these systems. Hold folks accountable if they ignore it.
- Level Playing Field (For Real): This body difference stuff is tricky. Saw research pointing to clear physical advantages in certain sports. Fairness matters too. So, for elite competitions where medals & records are on the line? Simple biology has to be considered alongside identity. Found studies showing bone density, muscle mass differences matter. Created a simple chart comparing data, drove the point home.
- Protect the Women Athlete: Locker rooms, traveling – basic privacy and safety CANNOT be an afterthought. Mandate separate facilities or strict privacy protocols. Saw horror stories about compromised spaces. Nope.
- Invest, Damn It! Watched budget meetings online. Heard the “lack of interest” excuse used to cut girls’ programs while dumping cash into men’s stuff. Dug up participation stats proving girls WANT to play when given actual resources – facilities, equipment, coaches, scholarships. Tracked where money flowed. Unequal AF.
So what did I do?
Wrote letters. Not just emails – old-school, stamped letters. Sent copies to school boards, local reps, state athletic associations. Used examples from my interviews, quoted the weak policies I found. Asked point-blank: “What are YOU doing about these 5 points? Specifically?” Printed my little chart comparing biological factors too. Included contact info. Put my name on it. Got a few boilerplate replies. One athletic director actually called, sounded worried. Maybe? Hoping it pokes the bear.
Honest takeaway?
This ain’t simple. It’s tangled with politics, feelings, big money. But sitting quiet? Doesn’t help anyone. Talking to the athletes showed the real human cost. Reading the rules showed the loopholes. Digging deeper into the body stuff? Needed the uncomfortable clarity. Action? Still waiting to see. But putting it out there makes it harder to ignore. Learned way more than I taught anyone else, that’s for damn sure.
