Got slapped with an email Monday from the school athletics director. “Need scores and highlights from Friday’s game uploaded yesterday.” Fantastic. First thing was just finding the damn information. Coach isn’t exactly tech-savvy.
Grabbed my ancient spreadsheet template. Typed “Woodhaven Titans vs. Riverside Bulldogs” at the top. Scrolled through texts and blurry photos friends sent from the stands. Final score? Somewhere in there. Spotted it: Woodhaven 24 – Riverside 17. Okay, progress.
Chasing Ghost Highlights
Getting the highlights? That’s the real circus. The kid who films the games? Yeah, he was recovering from the weekend apparently. Took three texts and a promise I wasn’t his mom before he answered. He finally tossed me a link to some cloud drive. Of course, password protected.
Finally got the video files. Opened the first one. Black screen. Audio of cheering? Great. Second file? Glitched halfway through. Third file? Perfect… except it was mostly shots of the cheerleaders and someone’s grandma eating popcorn. Gotta dig through this junk for actual football.
Found one decent clip: Jacob Miller’s 45-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter. Looked solid. Tried trimming it in that free editor I always use. Crashed. Twice. Cursed loudly enough the dog left the room. Finally got a clean 20-second clip saved. Highlight #1 done.

Now comes the part I hate. Drafting the post for the school’s shoddy sports blog page. Formatted it simple:

And Now… The Inevitable Aftermath
Checked my phone two minutes later. Texts buzzing.
- “Video starts buffering halfway through!” (Dad #1)
- “That was my son who made the tackle on 4th down!” (Mom #2)
- “Where’s the clip of the quarterback’s pass???” (Offended Friend #3)
Sighed deeply. Closed the laptop. Job done. Mostly. Now to rest before someone asks for the JV team’s stats. Genuinely not looking forward to Friday’s updates. This digital babysitting gig never ends.
