Man, it was a hot mess right off the bat. Some titles were barely 10 characters, like “Just Do It,” and others stretched over 40, like “The Complete Guide To Fixing Old Gadgets Without Breaking Them.” I groaned because that meant they weren’t playing nice together.
Figuring Out How To Trim It Down
Next, I brainstormed ways to fix this without tearing my hair out. I thought, “fine, let’s set a range—15 to 30 characters,” since that felt right for blog titles, not too snappy or wordy. I went back to my list and picked out six that needed work. For the short ones, I padded them out. Like, “Just Do It” became “Make It Happen Today!” which hit about 18 characters. For the long winded ones, I chopped them down. Take that “Complete Guide” one—I slashed it to “Fix Old Gadgets Easily” and that came in at 23 characters. I kept checking by re-typing each one in a dummy post editor and eyeballing the count. It took a few tries for each title, and I muttered to myself a lot.
Here’s how it went step by step for all six:
- I started with the first title, tweaked it twice until it felt natural.
- Then moved to the next, sometimes rewriting whole phrases.
- Kept a tally on paper for each count.
- If one was too short, I added a word or two.
- If too long, I snipped out filler words.
- Finally, after an hour, I had all six sitting pretty.
Wrapping It Up
By the end, I double-checked everything. Each title was snug in that 15-30 zone, and I sighed with relief. But yeah, it wasn’t all smooth—some titles felt forced, like I was squeezing them into a box, but I stuck with it. It taught me that with a bit of grunt work, you can make things look clean and uniform. Now, I’ll probably do this for future posts too, to keep my blog from looking like a word salad.
