Alright, so you wanna know about them punts in football, huh? Them fellas kickin’ the ball all the time. I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout it, sayin’ some teams punt a whole lot more than others. It’s like, why don’t they just run with the ball more, you know? But I guess that’s why they ain’t payin’ me to coach, eh?
Now, from what I gather, the Oakland Raiders, they punted a whole heap in one game. Sixteen times, they say! Sixteen! Can you believe that? Against them San Diego Chargers back in ’98. That’s a lot of kickin’ and not much runnin’, if you ask me. Must’ve been a real snoozer of a game. All that kickin’ and nothin’ else. I bet the folks in the stands were gettin’ restless.
Then there’s this talk about a “Punt Bowl” back in ’67. Now, that sounds like somethin’ else! A whole game just ’bout puntin’? I reckon them fellas must’ve had tired legs after that one. Puntin’ and puntin’ and puntin’. It’s enough to make your head spin. I tell ya, these football fellas, they do some strange things sometimes.
I also heard tell of a game with the Giants and the Jets, just a few years back. Rainy day, they say. And them two teams, they punted the ball 24 times! Twenty-four! That’s a whole lot of punts, even for a rainy day. A fella named Gillan and another fella named Morstead, they were doin’ all the kickin’. Must’ve been a real muddy mess out there. I can just picture it, them fellas slippin’ and slidin’, tryin’ to kick that ball. And the crowd, they probably just sittin’ there, watchin’ them kick and kick and kick.

That’s how you win games, not by puntin’ it all the time. But then again, what do I know? I’m just an old woman who likes to watch a little football now and then. I prefer the runnin’ and the catchin’ myself.
Now, some folks are real keen on keepin’ track of all these punts. They got all these fancy numbers and records. Like, the longest punt ever was 98 yards, they say. Ninety-eight yards! That’s like kickin’ the ball clear across a whole field! Some fella named Steve O’Neal did that. Must’ve had a real strong leg, that one. I bet he could kick a ball over a barn if he wanted to. These football fellas, they are somethin’ else.
And they talk about high-scoring games too. One game, way back when, the Redskins and the Giants scored a whole bunch of points, like 113 points in total. But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with puntin’, I guess. Just goes to show ya, there’s all sorts of ways to play this game. You can kick it a lot, or you can run it and throw it a lot. It all depends on the teams, I reckon.
So, there you have it. A little bit about them punts in football. Seems like some teams do it a whole lot more than others. And some games are just full of punts, like that “Punt Bowl” and that rainy day game with the Giants and the Jets. But at the end of the day, it’s all about gettin’ that ball into the end zone, one way or another. And sometimes, that means kickin’ it a whole heap of times.
In short, Raiders punted a lot in ’98, 16 times in one game. Gillan and Morstead punted 24 times between them for the Jets and Giants in one game. And sometimes, they even have whole games just full of punts. It’s a funny old game, this football. All that kickin’ and runnin’ and throwin’. But it sure is somethin’ to watch, ain’t it? Even if sometimes, I think they punt a little too much.
