Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with the whole tennis skirt trend, but I wanted something a little… extra. Enter: the polka dot tennis skirt! I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in stores, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

First, I scoured the internet for inspiration. I looked at tons of pictures of different styles – pleated, A-line, mini, the works. I knew I wanted something classic, but with a fun, retro vibe.
Finding the Right Fabric
This was probably the trickiest part. I needed something that would hold its shape, but also be comfortable enough to move around in. I ended up going to a local fabric store and feeling my way through rolls and rolls of fabric. (Seriously, my hands were probably covered in fabric dust by the end!).
- I considered a crisp cotton, but it felt a little too stiff.
- Then I looked at some linen blends, but they seemed like they’d wrinkle too easily.
- Finally, I found this amazing poly-blend fabric that had the perfect amount of structure and drape. Plus, it was white with these adorable little black polka dots! Score!
The Sewing Process
I used an old skirt that fit the way I liked to be the “pattern”.
Alright, time to get down to business. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not a professional seamstress or anything. I’ve dabbled in sewing before, but this was definitely my most ambitious project yet.
I carefully measured and cut the fabric, making sure to leave enough seam allowance. Then, the real fun began – pinning everything together! This part took a while, because I wanted to make sure the pleats were even and the polka dots lined up nicely.
Next, I fired up my trusty sewing machine. Slow and steady wins the race, right? I carefully stitched the seams, taking my time to make sure everything was straight and secure.
The trickiest part was definitely the waistband. I wanted it to be nice and snug, but not too tight. I ended up having to redo it a couple of times before I got it just right. (Let’s just say there was a lot of unpicking involved!).
The Final Result!
After a few hours of work (and a few minor mishaps along the way), I finally finished my polka dot tennis skirt! And you know what? I’m pretty darn proud of it! It’s exactly what I envisioned – cute, comfy, and totally unique.
I paired it with a simple black tank top and some white sneakers, and it’s the perfect outfit for a casual day out. I’ve even gotten a few compliments on it, which is always a nice bonus. It is not perfect but looks cool!
This whole project was a good reminder that sometimes, the best things are the ones you make yourself. It might take a little extra effort, but the feeling of accomplishment is totally worth it. Now, I am so happy with my polka dot tennis skirt, it’s great!
