Alright, so I decided to get serious about my fantasy football prep this year. I mean, really serious. No more last-minute scrambling. I wanted to dominate my league. And the best way to do that? Mock drafts. Lots and lots of mock drafts.

First thing I did was figure out which platform I liked best. I poked around a few different sites. They all pretty much do the same thing, but I found one with a draft interface I liked, it felt…clean. You know?
Then, I started joining random mock drafts. I didn’t overthink it at first. Just jumped in, different league sizes, different scoring settings…just to get a feel for things.
Getting My Hands Dirty
My early drafts were…a mess. Seriously. I made some truly awful picks. Like, laughably bad. I reached for players way too early, panicked when I didn’t get “my guys,” and generally just felt lost. But, hey, that’s what these things are for, right? Trial and error. Big time error, in my case.
I started keeping a little notebook (yeah, I’m that guy now). After each draft, I’d jot down:
- What went well? Did I snag some good value picks?
- What went wrong? Did I panic and reach for a quarterback in the third round again? (Spoiler: yes, I did).
- Players I kept missing out on: Was there a certain running back that everyone else seemed to grab before me?
- Players I regretted taking: Did that “sleeper” tight end turn out to be a total dud…again?
Seeing the Patterns
After a while, I started seeing some patterns. Like, I consistently waited too long on wide receivers. Or I’d get obsessed with getting a top-tier quarterback, even if it meant sacrificing depth at other positions. It’s like I was making the same mistakes over and over, but at least now I was aware of them.
So, I started adjusting my strategy in each new mock draft. Little tweaks. “Okay, this time I’m grabbing a receiver in the second round, no matter what.” Or, “I’m going to wait on a quarterback until at least the sixth round, even if it kills me.”
It starts to become clear!
Slowly but surely, things started clicking. I started feeling more confident during the drafts. I wasn’t just reacting; I was actually planning. And my teams started looking…well, not terrible! In fact, some of them looked pretty darn good.
I’m still doing mock drafts almost every day. I’ve probably done, like, 20 at this point? It’s become a bit of an obsession. But I feel so much more prepared for my real draft now. I have a much better sense of player values, where the tiers drop off, and what kind of team I want to build.
So, yeah, that’s my mock draft journey. From clueless newbie to…well, slightly less clueless newbie. But hey, progress is progress! And I’m pretty sure I’m not going to finish last in my league this year. At least, I hope not!
