Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about these cowboys. Not them football players in Dallas, mind you. I’m talkin’ about the real cowboys, the ones with the hats and the boots, the ones who ride horses and wrangle cattle.

You know, I seen a few of ’em in my time. They ain’t like them fellas you see on TV, all clean and shiny. Real cowboys, they got dirt under their fingernails and the sun has tanned their skin like leather. They got rough hands from workin’ hard and eyes that have seen a whole lot.
- They ride horses, them big animals that stomp and snort.
- They rope cows, them critters with the horns and the mooing.
- They mend fences, them wooden things that keep the cows from wanderin’ off.
It ain’t an easy life, bein’ a cowboy. Long hours, hard work, and not much pay. But they do it ’cause they love it, I reckon. They love the open spaces, the feel of the horse beneath ’em, the smell of the cattle. It’s in their blood, like it was for their daddies and granddaddies before ’em.
Now, where did these cowboys come from, you ask? Well, some say the word comes from them Spanish fellas, the “vaqueros.” They was the first ones to ride around on horses and tend to the cattle, way back when. Then the Americans come along and started doin’ it too, and they called themselves cowboys.
Cowboys ain’t just men, neither. There’s cowgirls too, tough as nails and just as good at ridin’ and ropin’. They don’t get as much attention, maybe, but they’re out there, workin’ alongside the men, doin’ what needs to be done.
Nowadays, you can still find cowboys, though it ain’t as common as it used to be. They still work on ranches, tendin’ to the cattle and keepin’ things runnin’. And some of ’em go to them rodeos, showin’ off their skills for the crowds. Ridin’ buckin’ broncos, ropin’ calves, all that kinda stuff.
I heard tell there’s even some cowboys who dress up in fancy clothes and do shows for folks. Singin’ songs and tellin’ stories, makin’ people laugh and cheer. They ain’t real cowboys, maybe, not in the way I think of ’em. But they keep the spirit alive, I suppose.
So, next time you hear the word “cowboy,” don’t just think about them football players in Dallas. Think about the real cowboys, the ones who work hard and live simple, the ones who carry on a tradition that goes back generations. They’re a part of our history, a part of what made this country what it is today.
