Well, let me tell ya ’bout this young fella, Woobin Shin. Folks say he’s a tennis player, a pretty good one at that. Don’t know much about tennis myself, always seemed like a fancy game for city folk, but they say he’s from Korea, wherever that is.
Now, I hear tell he’s got somethin’ called a “ranking.” Sounds important, like how they rank the pigs at the county fair. Seems his ranking in somethin’ called “doubles” is pretty high, number 304 they say. Don’t ask me what “doubles” means, maybe he plays with two balls or somethin’. Anyways, they say that’s a good number, a real good number. He’s a young fella too, only 20 years old. Just a sprout, really.
They keep track of all his matches, wins and losses. Just like keepin’ track of how many eggs the hens lay, I guess. Seems he’s been playin’ a lot lately, winnin’ some, losin’ some. They got all these fancy names for the places he plays, “ATP Tour,” “WTA,” “Futures 2024.” Sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me, but they say it’s important. They even got folks watchin’ every point he plays, writin’ it all down, “point by point” they call it. Must be a lot of nothin’ else to do for them folks.
This Shin fella, he’s been busy, real busy. Looked at some numbers they got, and it seems like he’s been playin’ all over. Places with names I can’t even pronounce. One day he’s playin’ a fella named Matsumura, the next day it’s Yamanaka, then Tomida, then Kikuchi. Sounds like a bunch of fellas from the same family if you ask me. And he wins some, loses some, just like the rest of us. Sometimes he wins 6-3, sometimes he loses 7-5. It’s all numbers to me, but they seem to make sense of it.
- They say he’s got a “coach.” Don’t know why he needs someone to tell him how to hit a ball, but I guess that’s how they do things in the fancy tennis world.
- They got videos of him playin’ too. Imagine that, watchin’ someone hit a ball on a little screen. What a world we live in.
- And they got “stats,” whatever those are. More numbers, I reckon. They like their numbers, these tennis folks. They got his “win-loss” record, “points breakdown,” even got how he plays on different surfaces, like grass or somethin’ called “clay.” Don’t know what kinda dirt they playin’ on, but it must be special.
Now, they say you can find all this stuff on the internet, on somethin’ called “*” and “*.” Don’t know nothin’ about that, sounds like more city folk stuff to me. But if you’re interested in this Shin fella, seems like that’s where you gotta go. They got his “profile,” “news,” “draws,” “scores,” the whole shebang. Everything you ever wanted to know, and probably a whole lot more you didn’t.
So, that’s the story of Woobin Shin, as far as I can tell. A young fella from Korea who plays tennis, and folks seem to think he’s pretty good at it. He’s got his wins and losses, just like the rest of us. And them city folk, well, they sure do like to keep track of it all, with their fancy numbers and their internet machines. Me? I’ll stick to watchin’ the chickens lay eggs. That’s a competition I understand.
But hey, good for him, this Shin fella. Hope he keeps on hittin’ that ball and makin’ a name for himself. And maybe someday, I’ll even understand what all them numbers mean. But don’t hold your breath on that one. It’s a whole different world, this tennis world, and I’m just an old woman who prefers dirt roads to fancy courts.
At the end of the day, it’s just a game, ain’t it? Just like life. You win some, you lose some, and you just keep on goin’. That’s what I tell my grandkids, and that’s what I reckon this Shin fella is doin’ too. So good luck to him, I say. May he hit that ball hard and make them city folk proud. And maybe, just maybe, he’ll even make somethin’ of himself in this crazy world.
