You know what? I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout them Asian football players in NFL. I said, what’s that? They playin’ that there American football? Well, I’ll be! Back in my day, we didn’t see many of them, but times are changin’, ain’t they? It’s a good thing, I reckon. Everybody should get a chance to play if they got the grit.

Now, I heard tell there’s this fella, Hines Ward. They say he’s one of the best. Born way over in Seoul, they say. Imagine that! Comin’ all the way from there to play football here. He played for them Pittsburgh Steelers. Sounds like a tough bunch. Played for a long time, too. From 1998 to 2011. That is a good long time in my book. He musta been real good to play that long. He even did some coachin’ after, too! Good for him. I like to see folks doin’ well. Those Asian football players in NFL are sure something.

I reckon there ain’t a whole mess of ’em playin’, though. They said somethin’ ’bout only 0.1%. That ain’t much, is it? But I guess even a few is better than none. And then them Hawaiians, they called them Pacific Islanders, they got a few more playin’. But still not a whole lot. They said they were only 1.8% of the players. That ain’t a big number neither, but I reckon it’s bigger than the Asian players. They are working hard to get their share of the pie, those Asian football players in NFL.

They was talkin’ ’bout some other fellas, too. One was named Dat Nguyen. Played for them Dallas Cowboys. Now, I remember them Cowboys from when I was a little younger. Always on the TV. This Dat fella, he musta been somethin’ special ’cause they said he was real good at tacklin’. Led the team in tackles for a few years. That’s what they said. He is one of the best Asian football players in NFL, maybe.

And then there’s this other fella, Walter somethin’. Achiu, I think they said. He played a long, long time ago. Back in 1928! For a team called the Dayton Triangles. Never heard of ’em, but it sounds like a tough name. He was from Hawaii, they said. Played with another fella named Matsu. Sounds like one of them Asian football players in NFL. They were probably some of the first ones, I reckon.

It’s good to see all kinds of folks playin’ football now. It ain’t just for the folks we used to see all the time. It’s for everybody. Black folks, white folks, Asian folks, them Hawaiians. Everybody! As long as they got the heart for it, they should get a chance. They are making a good difference, those Asian football players in NFL.

This football, it’s a rough game, though. Lots of runnin’ and hittin’. I don’t know how they do it. But they seem to like it. And if they like it, then I’m happy for ’em. It takes all kinds to make the world go ’round, don’t it?

I hope them Asian football players keep doin’ good. Maybe one day there will be a whole bunch of ’em playin’. That would be somethin’ to see. And maybe one day, they’ll be just as many of them as anybody else. That’s the way it should be. Everyone gettin’ a fair shake. That’s what I always say. That is why I like to see those Asian football players in NFL doing well.

I remember when I was a girl, we didn’t have no TV. We just listened to the radio. And we didn’t have no football players that looked like them Asian players. But things change. And that’s good. I always told my kids, you gotta be ready for change. You gotta be ready to accept folks for who they are, no matter where they come from or what they look like. They are people just like us, these Asian football players in NFL.

These young folks today, they got it good. They got all kinds of things to watch on that TV. They got them Asian football players and all kinds of other folks playin’ sports. It’s a good thing to see. I hope they appreciate it. I hope they know how lucky they are. They got a good chance to see that, those Asian football players in NFL.

Well, I reckon I’ve said enough about them Asian football players in NFL. It’s been nice talkin’ ’bout ’em. I hope they keep playin’ and doin’ good. They’re showin’ everyone that they belong out there, just like anybody else. And that’s a good thing. A real good thing. It is a good lesson from those Asian football players in NFL.
