The 1965 NFL Draft: Game-Changers and Hall of Famers

Alright, let’s talk about this 1965 NFL Draft thing. I ain’t no expert, ya know, just tellin’ it like I see it. Back in ’65, they had this draft, see? Big deal for them football fellas.

The 1965 NFL Draft: Game-Changers and Hall of Famers

The Big Names, they called ’em. This Butkus fella, Dick Butkus, went to Chicago. Tough as nails, I heard. Then there’s Gale Sayers, same team, Chicago. Fast as a greased pig, that one. Both them boys, they ended up in that Hall of Fame thingy. Musta been somethin’ special, huh?

Now, this draft, it ain’t like pickin’ apples. They got rounds, see? Lots of ’em. Team picks a fella, then another team, and so on. This 1965 draft, they had a bunch of rounds. Don’t rightly remember how many, but it was a lot. More fellas gettin’ picked than chickens in my coop.

They had this thing called a “bonus pick” back in the day, but not in ’65, see. Before that. Winner of some draw gets the first pick. Lucky ducks. But in ’65, it was all regular pickin’. Team by team, round by round.

  • First pick, New York got this Tucker Frederickson fella.
  • Second pick, San Francisco took Ken Willard.
  • Then Chicago got Butkus and Sayers, like I said.

They also had this other league, AFL, they called it. Sometimes they had their own drafts, even a “redshirt” draft later on, in 1984, but for ’65, we talkin’ about the NFL draft. Keeps things simple, ya know?

This draft thing, it happened in New York City. Fancy hotel, I bet. Not like my old farmhouse, that’s for sure. All them big shots sittin’ around, pickin’ their players. Musta been somethin’ to see.

So, this 1965 draft, it was a big one. Lots of players got picked, some good, some not so good. That’s just how it is. But them Hall of Famers, Butkus and Sayers, they were the cream of the crop. Made them Chicago Bears somethin’ special, I reckon.

They talk about other drafts too, like in ’74, ’80, and ’83. Different years, different players. But ’65, that’s the one we’re talkin’ about now. Aikman, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, those fellas came later, in the 80’s. Good players, but not from ’65.

Draft Results, they call it. Just a list of who went where. You can find it online, I hear. All them fellas, team by team, round by round. Too much for my old eyes, to be honest.

Now, this draft, it’s important for the teams, see? They get new players, young fellas ready to run and hit. Builds a team, makes ’em stronger. That’s the whole point, I guess.

And that’s about all I know ‘bout this 1965 NFL draft. Big names, lots of picks, and a whole lotta fuss. Just like pickin’ apples, but with bigger fellas and more money involved, I reckon.
