Alright, so y’all wanna know about this Anna Frye and her tennis, huh? Let me tell ya, this girl, she’s somethin’ else. I seen some folks playin’ tennis on the TV before, but this one, she’s different.
Now, I ain’t no tennis expert, mind you. I’m just a regular person, like you. But I can tell ya, this Anna girl, she’s got folks talkin’. They say she’s real young, just a young’un, like sixteen or somethin’. Can you believe that? Sixteen and already smackin’ that ball around like a pro. Heard tell she just beat some German girl, Tamara somethin’-or-other, in straight sets. That means she won fair and square, no messin’ around. Straight sets, that’s impressive, real impressive, even for an old woman like me to understand.
They call her a “prodigy,” this Anna. That’s a fancy word, I reckon. Means she’s real good at somethin’ for her age. Like, you know, little Timmy down the road, he’s a prodigy at eatin’ pie. This girl, though, she’s a prodigy at tennis. Big difference, I’d say. Pie’s good, but tennis, well, that gets you on TV, I guess.
- She’s from the USA, that’s what they say. Good ol’ USA.
- She won in somethin’ called the “Tennis in the Land Open.” Sounds fancy.
- Lots of folks are followin’ her on that social media stuff. Hundreds of thousands, they say. That’s a whole lotta people, more than in my whole town, I betcha.
Now, some folks say you gotta start playin’ tennis when you’re just a little tyke, you know, four or five years old. They say it takes years and years of practice, like ten or fifteen years, to get real good. And even then, you might not make it big. This Anna girl, she musta been swingin’ a racket since she was in diapers, I reckon. That’s a lot of swingin’, let me tell ya. My arms get tired just thinkin’ about it.
But they also say, and this is important, they say it ain’t never too late to start. You can start playin’ tennis whenever you want, even if you’re old and gray like me. Course, I ain’t gonna be no pro, that’s for sure. My back’s too creaky and my knees ain’t what they used to be. But you could, maybe. You could go out there and learn to hit that ball. Just be warned, they say it takes a long time to get good. A long “runway,” they call it. Like an airplane, I guess. Gotta get up to speed before you can fly. Same with tennis, gotta practice and practice before you can play like Anna.
This Anna girl, she makes it look easy, though. But I know it ain’t. Nothin’ worthwhile is ever easy, that’s what my mama used to say. And she was a smart woman, my mama. She didn’t know nothin’ about tennis, but she knew about hard work. And that’s what it takes to be good at anything, tennis or pie-eatin’ or whatever.
So, there you have it. That’s all I know about Anna Frye and her tennis. She’s young, she’s good, and she’s got a whole lotta people watchin’ her. She makes me wanna pick up a racket myself, even though I’d probably just end up hittin’ myself in the head. But hey, maybe one day I’ll give it a try. You never know. Maybe I’ll be the next tennis prodigy. Okay, maybe not. But it’s nice to dream, ain’t it?
And by the way I heard that some tennis players have back troubles and have to stop playing. Like this one girl, Kournikova. Never won no singles title but won some doubles with her friend. So playing too much can be bad for your back it seems.
