Alright, listen up, y’all. I’m gonna tell ya ’bout this here movie, “Champions.” Now, I ain’t no fancy movie critic or nothin’, just tellin’ it like I see it. This here movie, it’s about basketball, but not the kind you see on TV with all them tall, skinny fellas runnin’ around like chickens with their heads cut off.

This here basketball is different. See, it’s played by folks who… well, they ain’t quite like the rest of us. They got what they call “intellectual disabilities.” Means they learn a little slower, think a little different. But lemme tell ya, they got hearts bigger than watermelons, and they sure can play some basketball.
The main fella in the movie, this Woody Harrelson guy, he plays a fella named Marcus. Now, Marcus, he ain’t exactly a saint. He’s got a bad temper, drinks too much, and gets himself into a whole heap of trouble. The judge, he ain’t too happy with Marcus, so he sentences him to coach this special basketball team. Serves him right, I say.
At first, Marcus, he don’t wanna do it. He thinks it’s a waste of time, these folks ain’t gonna learn nothin’. But he’s wrong, see? These players, they got spirit. They got determination. And they got this coach, this Marcus fella, who starts to see ’em not just as “disabled” folks, but as people, as players, as friends.
- It ain’t easy, though. They gotta learn to work together, to trust each other, and to believe in themselves.
- And Marcus, he’s gotta learn to be patient, to be understanding, and to be a better person.
And that’s what this movie is all about, see? It’s about overcoming challenges, about finding your place in the world, and about the power of friendship and teamwork. It’s about seein’ the good in folks, even when they’re different, even when they got problems.
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, there’s some sad parts in this movie. These players, they face discrimination, they face doubts, they face setbacks. But they don’t give up. They keep playin’, they keep tryin’, they keep fightin’. And that, that’s somethin’ to admire, I tell ya.
And the funny parts? Oh, there’s plenty of them too. These players, they got a sense of humor, they like to laugh, they like to have fun. And Woody Harrelson, he’s pretty funny too, even when he’s bein’ a grumpy old goat.
I heard tell this movie is a remake of some Spanish movie, “Campeones” they call it. And it’s based on a true story, which makes it even better, I reckon. ‘Cause it shows ya that real folks, regular folks, they can do amazing things, no matter what kind of challenges they face. It ain’t all about fancy plays and slam dunks, it’s about the heart and soul of the game, and the heart and soul of the people playin’ it.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a feel-good movie, a movie that’ll make ya laugh and cry, a movie that’ll make ya think, then you should go see “Champions.” It ain’t perfect, mind you, but it’s got a good message, and it’s got a whole lotta heart. And that’s somethin’ we could all use a little more of these days, ain’t it?
And let me tell you somethin’ else, this movie ain’t nothin’ like “Glory Road.” I saw that one too, and it was all about racism and how them black fellas couldn’t play basketball just ’cause of the color of their skin. This movie, it’s different, it’s about folks with different minds, not different skin colors. But both movies, they show ya that everybody deserves a chance, everybody deserves respect, and everybody deserves to be treated fair and square.
So yeah, go see “Champions.” You might just learn somethin’, and you might just have a good time. And that’s all that matters, right?
