Alright, so listen up, y’all. Let’s talk about this Emory and Henry football, okay? Them Wasps, that’s what they call ’em. Don’t ask me why, somethin’ to do with bugs, I reckon. Anyways, they got their games all lined up for the year, and folks are gettin’ all riled up about it.

Now, I ain’t no fancy sports expert or nothin’, but I can tell ya when folks are excited ’bout somethin’. And let me tell you, these folks ’round here, they love their football. It’s like a big ol’ picnic, but with more yellin’ and less potato salad.
So, when do they play? Well, that’s the whole shebang, ain’t it? They got a whole mess of games comin’ up. Looks like they started back in August, whipped some team called Glenville State. Thirty-eight to seven, that’s a good whuppin’, I tell ya. Then they went on and beat Bluefield State, forty to thirteen. Them Wasps were buzzin’ around, stingin’ everybody! Then they stung Barton College 41 to nothin’. Man, they were on a roll!
- August 31st: They played that Glenville State team and won big.
- September 14th: Beat up on Bluefield State, too.
- September 21st: Shut out Barton College. Didn’t let ’em score a single point!
I hear tell they’re playin’ all sorts of teams this year. Big schools, little schools, don’t matter none to them Wasps. They just go out there and play their hearts out. That’s what I like to see, good honest effort. None of that fancy-pants stuff, just good ol’ fashioned football.
Now, where do you find all this information, you ask? Well, my grandson, he’s always fiddlin’ with that phone of his. Says you can find anything on there. He showed me somethin’ called “ESPN.” Sounds like gibberish to me, but it’s got all the games and times and scores and such. He says it’s got highlights too, which I guess is like watchin’ the best parts without havin’ to sit through the whole thing. Handy, I reckon, for us folks with things to do.
And get this, these Wasps, they weren’t always playin’ with the big boys. They used to be in some other group, Division III they called it. But now they’re Division II, movin’ on up in the world! Just like my prize-winning tomatoes, startin’ small and growin’ bigger and better every year. They even got themselves on some kinda regional rankin’ list. First time ever, they say. Big deal, I guess. Folks seem to think so, anyway.
What else is there to say? They got a coach, some fella named Newsome. He seems alright, knows his football, I guess. Got them boys playin’ hard. They got players, runnin’ and throwin’ and catchin’ that ball. And they got fans, cheerin’ and hollerin’ and havin’ a grand ol’ time. That’s what football is all about, far as I can tell. Bringin’ folks together, givin’ ‘em somethin’ to root for.
So, if you wanna know more, you go look it up on that “ESPN” thingamajig. Or just ask around. Somebody ’round here is bound to know somethin’ ’bout them Wasps and their football schedule. It’s the talk of the town, you know. And if you’re lucky, maybe you can even catch a game. Just be sure to bring your yellin’ voice and your cheerin’ spirit. You’ll need ‘em both.
Oh, and they also got live scores and news and stuff on that internet thing. Kids these days with their phones and fancy gadgets, always knowin’ everything before it even happens. But hey, that’s progress for ya. Can’t stop it, might as well join it, I always say. Even this old lady can appreciate knowin’ the score without havin’ to wait for the newspaper.
